Estimate federal estate tax after preparing the estate's valuations, deductions, gifts and valid additional exclusion. Historical liabilities, property in another jurisdiction and estate income require separate review.

The primary-source rule for North Carolina

North Carolina's revenue history identifies repeal of its estate tax for deaths on or after January 1, 2013 under Session Law 2013-316. Earlier inheritance and estate-tax collections belong to prior law, not a separate beneficiary tax on a 2026 death.

North Carolina collection by affidavit

G.S. 28A-25-1 allows collection of personal property by affidavit after 30 days when its value, net of liens, does not exceed $20,000. When the surviving spouse is the sole heir, the limit rises to $30,000 after any spousal allowance.

Collection history is not a 2026 beneficiary rate

North Carolina's official revenue table identifies the estate-tax repeal under Session Law 2013-316 and also distinguishes the earlier inheritance repeal. Revenue shown for later collection years can relate to deaths before those changes. An old collection in a statistical report does not establish that a person dying in 2026 is subject to a North Carolina death tax.

For an estate being settled now, record both the original death date and the current administrative activity. A new distribution date cannot replace the death date used by the repeal. If there is an outstanding historical assessment, use the original legal period and agency instructions rather than inserting the current zero-state-tax answer into that assessment's arithmetic.

A North Carolina estate holding Pennsylvania property needs a separate inheritance-tax review when applicable. Pennsylvania's recipient relationships and rates are not a North Carolina tax. Prepare property and beneficiary records for that review; then distinguish any eligible paid state death tax from the federal gross estate and deductions used below. The tool does not automatically allocate taxes among heirs or choose which estate pays them.
