Estimate federal estate tax after preparing the estate's valuations, deductions, gifts and valid additional exclusion. Historical liabilities, property in another jurisdiction and estate income require separate review.
The primary-source rule for South Dakota
South Dakota Revenue explicitly states that the state has neither inheritance nor estate tax. It dates the inheritance repeal to July 1, 2001. Other taxes, probate administration and assets located in a taxing state need separate consideration.
South Dakota affidavits and opt-in community property trusts
SDCL 29A-3-1201 allows collection by affidavit 30 days after death when the entire estate, wherever located and net of liens, does not exceed $100,000.
South Dakota's Community Property Trust Act (SDCL chapter 55-17, enacted 2016) lets married couples opt into community treatment for assets placed in a qualifying trust; the trust instrument must carry a statutory warning in capital letters.
Nebraska inheritance tax can still apply to Nebraska real estate owned by a South Dakota resident. Open the Nebraska worksheet.
The revenue page gives a direct no-tax answer
South Dakota's department states that it has neither inheritance nor estate tax and identifies the 2001 inheritance repeal. That eliminates the need for a relationship-based South Dakota death-tax calculation for a 2026 decedent. A child and an unrelated friend do not receive different current South Dakota inheritance-tax rates merely because a neighboring state's calculator distinguishes those relationships.
A transfer can still involve an estate administered elsewhere or property in a jurisdiction that taxes estates or beneficiaries. Build the asset-location inventory and establish domicile before relying on the South Dakota result for the whole estate. South Dakota's general tax page is evidence for the local rule; it is not a ruling about Minnesota property or Nebraska inheritance-tax jurisdiction.
For a sizeable estate, federal citizenship, resident status and prepared gift history remain essential. The worksheet does not obtain those facts from a South Dakota address. Enter actual approved deductions and confirmed portability only after that work is complete. Its federal tax result does not determine how the executor allocates liability or whether all assets are available immediately for distribution to beneficiaries.
