Estimate federal estate tax after preparing the estate's valuations, deductions, gifts and valid additional exclusion. Historical liabilities, property in another jurisdiction and estate income require separate review.

Idaho levies no estate or inheritance tax, but neighbouring Oregon (estate tax) and Washington (estate tax) do. Real estate or tangible property located there can fall under that state's own rules and thresholds even when the owner was domiciled in Idaho: Oregon estate tax calculator · Washington estate tax calculator.

The primary-source rule for Idaho

Idaho's Tax Commission explicitly lists no inheritance or gift tax and says its estate tax expired in 2004. Its guidance separately directs estates and trusts to fiduciary income-tax rules; the absence of a death tax does not exempt income during administration.

Worked example: $5 million of lifetime gifts and a $12 million Idaho estate

An Idaho resident gave $5,000,000 of adjusted taxable gifts during life, paid no federal gift tax on them, and dies in 2026 with a $12,000,000 prepared gross estate and $400,000 of deductions. Idaho has no gift tax on the earlier transfers and no tax at death. Federal Form 706 adds the gifts back: $11,600,000 plus $5,000,000 is $16,600,000, which is $1,600,000 over the $15,000,000 basic exclusion, so the federal worksheet estimates $640,000.

Leave the gifts out and the same $11,600,000 taxable estate stays under the exclusion, with a federal estimate of $0. That gap is why the gift history belongs in the inputs even though Idaho itself never taxed the gifts.

Idaho affidavits and the community-income rule

Idaho Code § 15-3-1201 allows collection of a decedent's property by affidavit once 30 days have passed, when the entire probate estate, wherever located and net of liens, does not exceed $100,000 and no personal representative application is pending.

Idaho Code § 32-906 makes property acquired after marriage community property, and also treats income from separate property as community unless the spouses agree otherwise in writing — a rule that can move investment income onto the community side of the inventory.

Estate income survives the expiration of a death tax

Idaho's Tax Commission places estate and trust income guidance beside its statement about expired estate tax. That layout can confuse an executor who searches only for the word estate. Identify the tax base first: a value transferred at death is different from rent, interest or business earnings produced afterward. The source's absence of an inheritance or gift tax does not resolve fiduciary income reporting.

An Idaho beneficiary can receive principal and taxable income in the same distribution. Obtain the fiduciary's accounting and any required income reporting documents before classifying the entire payment as one inheritance amount. This page estimates transfer-tax exposure only. It does not calculate the beneficiary's income tax, basis, gain on a later sale or the estate's annual income liability.

If the decedent also owned Washington property, the Washington estate worksheet deserves separate attention. Its current rules do not become Idaho rules merely because the executor lives in Idaho. For the federal form below, prepare the gross estate and deductions consistently; a property valuation must not be reduced by an unverified percentage intended to stand in for probate costs.
