Estimate federal estate tax after preparing the estate's valuations, deductions, gifts and valid additional exclusion. Historical liabilities, property in another jurisdiction and estate income require separate review.
The primary-source rule for Wyoming
Wyoming Revenue says no estate tax is due for deaths after 2004 because its law follows the abolished federal credit. It still offers a certificate of no tax due when evidence is needed. The department removed the certificate's $10 processing fee effective July 1, 2022.
The no-tax certificate is still available without the old fee
Wyoming's current department statement provides an application for a certificate of no estate tax due. It also documents the July 2022 removal of the former ten-dollar processing fee. If a transfer agent asks for evidence, use the current application linked by the agency rather than an old fee instruction copied from an archived checklist. The certificate and the calculation are different tasks.
The application asks for domicile, date of death, Wyoming and total estate valuations, and whether federal Form 706 was filed. Having no Wyoming tax does not make those requested facts unnecessary when a certificate is sought. The worksheet below does not issue a department certificate, sign its statement or replace the executor's valuation records and required supporting information.
The department explains that Wyoming's tax remains tied to the unavailable federal credit and could change if the federal mechanism changes. Do not turn that observation into a current payment obligation or a guarantee about future death years. For a 2026 estate with Washington property, review Washington independently and retain its property allocation before entering any eligible state deduction in the prepared federal form.
